(Springfield, IL) Illinois’ Governor has announced the end of his emergency Covid powers, but it’s still months away. Governor JB Pritzker says he will stop declaring Covid emergencies on May 11th. That date coincides with President Joe Biden’s announcement that he will end the national Covid emergency. Governor Pritzker has declared an emergency every month since March of 2020 (39 in total), which allowed his office to set pandemic rules, and receive federal loans and reimbursement for the state’s pandemic response. Nationally, the move to end the Covid emergency will formally restructure the federal response to treat the virus as an endemic threat to public health, which can be managed through normal authorities.
